Pipe
Categories:
Frank Axmacher Cobra 10271024
The pipe takes advantage of the fine briar, accentuating the
marvelous Bird's Eye grain that covers the entire length of the
pipe, but which, due to my inanity was not photographed.  If I
can remember, I'll have that done at the next opportunity.
6 1/2" long. Weight: 3 3/8 oz., 95 grams.  New. Price: $325
Frank Axmacher Grade C #5102799
Pretty pipe, huh?  What you can't see is that it is slightly
asymmetrical, with the right side (as you're holding the pipe)
effecting a slight concave curve.  It still sits up.  It is as well
proportioned as it looks.  New. Price: $445
5.6" long, bowl 1.98" high. Weight: 1 5/8 oz., 45 grams.

Wolfgang Becker Wolfpaw #5225411
It feels great to lead off the page with a Wolfgang Becker of this
quality.  the grain is excellent all around and there are not a lof
of 7 knuckle bamboo shanks.  In short, this is rather special.
7.8" long, bowl 1.8" high. Weight: 1.5 oz., 44 grams. New. $1250
Frank Axmacher A Grade #514 8167
If you have the time and/or the inclination, please blow up the
photos of this pipe.  The larger, more life-size photos do much
greater justice to the beauty of this Snail.  And the grain is just
short of magnificent, with that one imperfect (not at all bad, just
not perfect) patch visible in the top side shot near the hook in
the snail.  Construction is great, the air hole is right on the
bottom of the chamber and it takes a cleaner easily.  This man
will make a name for himself as a pipe maker, mark my words.
6.7" long, bowl 1.8" high.  Weight: 2 78 oz., 80 grams. $850
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8231
I hereby introduce Mr. Heiner Nonnenbroich to the U.S.  I
wrestled with the idea of starting with another pipe maker, what
with the surfeit we already have and a less than perfect
economy, but the value in his pipes helped make up my mind,
as did his 6'5" sinister son. This sandblasted Horn has a brindle
stem and a decorative ring at the end of the shank.  Also, the
inside part of the bowl rim is a smooth dark brown, giving the
pipe an extra bit of panache.  The introductory prices for
Heiner's pipes (I insulted his pipes a bit and then did a bit of
haggling....all on your behalf, you understand) are lower than
they would ordinarily be.  I forget by how much, but enough.
4.95" long, bowl 2" tall.  Weight: 1.5 oz., 44 grams. price: $295
Moritz #5225388                                       (Tamper is Sold)
From the long of it to the short of it.  A true nose warmer.  The
blast reveals a subtle, but quite true, ring grain from the top to
the bottom of the bowl.  And it is not too short to enjoy the bowl.
4.15" long, bowl 1.3" high.  Weight: 1 oz., 30 grams. New. $275
Ming Kahuna tamper is the Bluto in Bali. 3.4" long, .5 oz. $80
Peter Matzhold #12186572JH
This pipe was made before Peter started grading his pieces,
although does have an "89" stamped on it, which might well be
the year in which it was made.  Grade or no, it exhibits the
stellar wood that Peter always chooses, with a fine, tight
straight grain all around the pipe.  The condition is excellent
and the draw open.  The lightweight is a bonus.  Yes, I know
that Peter is Austrian, not German.  Used.  $265
6.1" long, bowl 1.6" high.  Weight:  1.25 oz., 36 grams.
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8249
This shape is a throwback to something, but I can't recall exactly
what.  It does have a smallish tobacco chamber, but the stem is
really flat and comfortable, so if you like heavy flakes, this is
worth considering.  I like the combo smooth-blast treatment, but
I'm well aware that's not everybody's taste.  It reminds me of the
Barling Quaint, which I think of as one of the most beautiful
treatments ever given to a pipe when done well.  New.
4.65" long, bowl 1.6" tall.  Weight: 1.5 oz., 41 grams. Price: $420
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8238
Heiner's pipes are generally on the small side, as is this, but
the bowl capacity is quite decent, it taking my index finger to the
bottom of the chamber.  As handsome as the pipe is, the flat,
very comfortable stems may be the best feature of the pipes.
5.2" long, bowl 1.7" tall.  Weight: 1.5 oz., 41 grams. Price: $460
Wolfgang Becker Wolf Paw #12186512
This is the largest of the recent arrivals, and it exhibits a flair for
stem design.  The longer, thinner stem helps give a sleeker look to
one of Wolfgang's typically asymmetrical shapes.  As always, the
construction and finish are superb.  New. Price: $1185
5" long, bowl 2.15" high.  Weight:  3 1/8 oz., 88 grams.
Peter Klein #118149BT
I am not a big fan of straight grain...it rather bores me, but why
should you care what I think?  If you have been brainwashed to
think highly of straight grain pipes (and I do, truthfully, like them
a lot when they can bring in the long green) then you will love
this pipe.  Peter Klein is a good pipe maker,  yet this pipe is
going for ridiculously little considering the quality of the grain.  It
does have a grade, which I take to be the highest Peter puts on
a pipe, but I can not decipher the stamp on the shank. The
condition is near-new and the draw excellent.  this pipe comes
with two stems.  Used. Price: $275
6" long, bowl 1.9" high.  Weight:  2 1/4 oz. 63 grams.
Jurgen Moritz #121864486JBA
Jurgen is relatively new to pipe making, but in at least one
sense, one very critical sense, he imprints his pipes with an
aspect that he seems to understand, or at least internalize,
better than almost every other young pipe maker....his pipes
are comfortable to hold, in both the hand and the mouth.  His
stems are flat and thin and carefully crafted. New.
6.25" long, bowl 1.9" high.  Weight: 1.75 oz., 49 grams.  $325
Paul Becker Grade F #411 7641JT (SOLD 8/14/10)
Paul grew up in a pipe show, owned by his father.  Then Paul
took over and he became a true pipe man, learning to make as
well as repair pipes.  On this pipe, you can feel that
hand-turned bowl.  The flat brindle stem creates a
comfortaable mouth feel and the draw is wide open.  That
straight grain goes all the way around the bowl. Note the
two-tone, 2 wood ferrule.
5.5" long, bowl 1 3/4" tall.  Weight: 2 oz., 58 grams. New. $340.
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8233
A wide open draw and a near ring grain blast are the features
of this pipe, along, of course, with the treatment at the end of
the shank.  The stem is particularly comfortable and well made.
5.2" long, bowl 1.5" tall.  Weight: 2 5/8 oz., 73 grams.  $290
Cornelius Maenz A #514 8104 JBA
Excellent condition, with a wide open draw and, I think, an
example of Maenz at his best.  the grain is pretty good, too with
Bird's Eye on the flat side.  The stem is flat and comfortable.  I
have a good feeling about this pipe, for what that's worth. Used.
4.7" long, bowl 1.9" tall.  Weight: 2 1/8 oz., 60 grams. Price:$550
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8242
The bowl is shallow and the overall size of the pipe is quite
small, still, the bowl diameter is wide enough to allow a good
serving of tobacco and lengthy-enough smoke.  Like all of
Heiner's pipes, it is comfortable to hold in the hand and mouth.
5.2" long, bowl 1.3" tall.  Weight: 1 3/8 oz., 39 grams.  $375
Rainer Barbi #514 7879MB (SOLD 8/14/10)
I could not possibly know how you all define comfort in a pipe
(some people obviously find the outre sculptures of some pipe
makers to be comfortable) but this one fairly defines comfort for
me.  The reasonably sized smooth, round bowl (but still large
enough to have a capacious tobacco chamber) and the thin
and narrow stem button (a brindle stem if you like that bowling
ball treatment).  The Barbi name pretty much assures great
construction and an open draw.  The condition is excellent.
Recent info: Barbi has just announced that he will be at the Las
Vegas show this coming November.  Please join us there.
5" long, bowl 1.8" tall.  Weight: 1 3/8 oz., 40 grams. Price: $325
Cornelius Maenz BC #514 8112JBA
A medium small pipe with another of Cornelius's flat,
comfortable stems that makes the pipe, despite its weight, easy
to hold in the mouth.  The condition is excellent and the draw
fully open.  The trim is beechwood.  Used. Price: $450
4.7" long, bowl 1.6" tall.  Weight: 2 1/8 oz., 83 grams.
Paul Becker C Grade #514 7891MB (RESERVED)
This pipe was made for the well regarded Pfeifen Huber shop in
Munich.  I know that because that is what is stamped on the
shank.  It is in excellent condition and represents a true value.
5.6" long, bowl 2" tall.  Weight: 1 3/8 oz., 40 grams. Used. $135
Heiner Nonnenbroich #514 8246
A Churchwarden shaped bowl, canted forward, as on the old
Clay pipes, but with a shorter and much better made stem.  The
draw is open, which is good because it is a farily deep, narrow
tobacco chamber.  Terrific stemwork, as in all of Heiner's pipes.
5.5" long, bowl 2" tall.  Weight: 1 7/8 oz., 54 grams. Price: $275
Wolfgang Becker Wolfpaw #712 8316 (SOLD 8/5/10)
Another example of Wolfgang's already legendary work.  Great
to hold, great in the mouth with a fabulous stem and of course,
an open draw.  For the discriminating smoker.  New. Price: $950
4 5/8" long, bowl 2 1/4" tall.  Weight: 2 1/8 62 grams.
Barbi Grade AC #818 8676PJ
Now why did I bother to put the grade designation on this pipe?
I have no idea, just as I have no idea what his grades
represent, despite being Barbi's exclusive importer for the U.S.
what I do know is that this is a $630 pipe and it is offered by me,
because it is a consignment piece, for $480.  Take it or leave it.
6 1'8" long, bowl 1.65" tall.  Weight: 2.25 oz., 64 grms. New.
Joura A Grade #818 8670PJ
you can see the hand of a master in the quality of this shaping.
More than that, the pipe is so well balanced that it sits up
beautifully.  In addition, I claim that no modern pipe smokes as
well, as consistently, as does a Joura.  Sorry...you can have
your opinion, but that has been my experience and David Field,
my partner's experience.  This is also a consignment pipe, so it
is priced far, far below retail.  This is quite an opportunity. New.
5 1/8" long, bowl 2 1/4" tall.  Weight: 2 1/8 oz., 61 grams. $520
