As this is a Stokkebye by Jorgen Larsen, we know that it was made during that period around which Jorgen made the pipes under his own name, “JL” as the logo on the stem. I, along with David Field, was the importer of his pipes during his last years as a pipe maker. I still consider Jorgen as one of the three finest of the purist makers, that is, those who did not sacrifice performance for shape, carefully adhering to the trusted axiom, form should follow function. This piece does have some interesting ‘form’ but not at the expense of function. For example, even with the S bend here, the cleaner easily flows into the bottom of the chamber. I even used a bristle cleaner, which I suppose makes the passage that much the more difficult. The condition is excellent, with no marks on the vulcanite stem and no wear on the rim. The draw is wide-open and the size is a Grp. 6. The grading system always went. from N to A, or maybe from N down to . I know, based on the price list in front of me, that when we imported the pipe, A was the highest grade. That means that when Peter Stokkebye imported the pipe, N was the highest grade, and that is borne out in this J, near the top, by the great cross grain & superb Bird’s Eye at the front of the bowl.
